MTH provides each of its tinplate locomotive designs in two versions depending upon whether you prefer to operate these models using traditional "period" control systems or something more modern. Whilst the MTH tinplate Protosound equipped locomotives can still operate with a traditional 12 to 24 volt transformer/controller with "automatic" smoke and sound effects the use of a modern sound compatible controller will allow the full benefit of the Protosound-2 units that are built into these models. If all the track-powered locomotives are under digital command control then the transformer need only provide a fixed output. Using MTH controllers there are basically three options; firstly there is the DCS Commander (which if used with the MTH 110 volt transformer will need a step-down transformer, or you can power it your own ac or dc 18 volt supply). Secondly the DCS handset in combination with a TIU can be used to control multiple locomotives (and also trackside accessories via the AIU). The TIU can be fed with 18 to 22 volts dc from a plain transformer-rectifier or sets of batteries. We have heard of people using NiCd, NiMH and traditional lead-acid cells as power sources and of course the handset gives control of all four outputs of the TIU without being fixed near a control panel or dragging a cable around. The DCS Commander on the other hand is a lot more compact, it has the facility to "pass through" DCC command signals if you already use a DCC controller whilst also having the facility to act as a variable voltage dc controller. Lastly the DCS Commander remote provides the cheapest way of controlling the major functions of a Protosound equipped controller.
